Posted by Anna Wednesday 16 March 2011

Used since ancient times for its wide range of health benefits, Ashwagandha is a widely used ingredient in Ayurvedic practice. In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” implying that the herb has the vigor and vitality of a stallion, and has traditionally been prescribed to help people strengthen their immunity. A member of the tomato family, the leaves and fruits of the plant have valuable therapeutic properties. The roots of the Ashwagandha plant are commonly used in Western herbal remedies as well.

Also referred to as the Indian ginseng, Ashwagandha is used in traditional Indian medicine in a way similar to that of the use of Ginseng in traditional Chinese medicine. Ashwagandha is also used to enhance sexual potency for both men and women and is widely acknowledged for its invigorating properties.

The roots of the Ashwagandha have been used for years in the traditional medicinal system of Ayurveda. Numerous modern studies have found that Ashwagandha manifests the ability to help in the reduction of inflammation and stress. It is also known to promote physical and mental vitality and works as an anti-oxidant. Ashwagandha contains certain withanolides, alkaloids, choline, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars that are beneficial for the general health of man.

The plant has aphrodisiac, sedative, rejuvenating and life prolonging properties. A herb with numerous medicinal benefits, Ashwagandha extracts are known to assist in treating disorders like fatigue, constipation rheumatism, impotency, premature ageing and even memory loss. Recent research has proved Ashwagandha to be a preventive or therapeutic drug for stress induced neurological disorders.
