Posted by Anna Monday 21 March 2011

Ayurvedic practitioners consider Ashwagandha a general tonic for everything from hiccups to menstrual woes. Extensively used in traditional Indian and African medicine, studies show that the Ashwagandha herb is used to treat conditions like ulcers, general pain, breathing problems, dropsy and joint pains. Also known as a sedative, Ashwagandha is also used to treat neurological disorders.

One of the most widely recommended herbs in Ayurvedic practice, the properties of Ashwagandha have been explored for the preparation of herbal medicines. In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” implying that the herb has the vigor and vitality of a stallion, and has traditionally been prescribed to help people strengthen their immunity. Also referred to as the Indian ginseng, Ashwagandha is used in Ayurveda in a way similar to that of the use of Ginseng in traditional Chinese medicine. Ashwagandha is also proven to enhance sexual potency for both men and women and is widely acknowledged for its energizing properties.

The roots of the Ashwagandha have been used for years in the traditional medicinal system of Ayurveda. Numerous modern studies have found that Ashwagandha manifests the ability to help in the reduction of inflammation and stress. The herb has anti-oxidant properties and can enhance physical and mental vitality.
